Conveying the message that an individual’s role within an organisation is no longer sustainable is undeniably one of the most challenging discussions business leaders must undertake. In the current economic landscape, this dialogue is increasingly common.

Throughout my interactions with business leaders, I’ve engaged with those entrusted with the delicate duty of announcing redundancies and individuals whose career trajectories have been abruptly altered by unexpected departures. Amidst these scenarios, certain recurring themes consistently emerge as significant touchpoints in these conversations.

“When having to deliver difficult news to employees, managers and leaders must prepare, but not all do. Laying out a clear set of messages, role-playing the conversation and preparing to answer challenging questions are simple ways to ensure communication remains consistent and compassionate. Underpreparing can result in confusion and will often lead to negative sentiment rippling across the organisation.”
