Child Assessments

At Armchair Psychology in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, we offer a range of child assessments for children who may be having educational, behavioural or psychological difficulties. We conduct an initial consultation ($251) with the parents to determine the area of assessment best suited to the child and their needs. A final meeting with a report and recommendation is included in the cost of each assessment.

  • Cognitive Assessment Sydney         $950
  • This is an assessment of the child’s thinking, problem solving and reasoning skills and acknowledges strengths and weaknesses. With the psychologist, the child completes a series of age-appropriate activities to help determine intellectual giftedness, potential learning difficulties or disabilities and their IQ score.

  • Academic Assessment Sydney         $1,250
  • This full assessment includes a cognitive assessment but delves further into the child’s abilities in the core areas of education – reading, writing, spelling, mathematics and oral language. Performed for children of school age and even into university, this assessment will help determine specific academic strengths and weaknesses and comparative age or grade-matched academic achievement. An individual learning plan will also be recommended.

  • Social/Adaptive Assessment Sydney         $400
  • This assessment covers communication abilities, social interaction, motor skills and self-care/self-direction skills. It determines if a child is performing developmental skills at an age-appropriate level in comparison to their peers. The child’s teacher and/or parents complete a questionnaire in order to provide a more thorough history of development.

  • Formal Behavioural Assessment Sydney         $400
  • This test focuses on challenging behaviours that are abnormal for the age-appropriate group the child is in. It typically identifies disorders such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Conduct Disorder and Oppositional Defiance Disorder (ODD). The process involves a clinical session with the child and psychologist, parent interviews and a questionnaire as well as optional teacher interview and/or school observations. (at an extra cost) Performed for children aged 3-18 years.
