Feeling sad is a normal emotion that a person may experience occasionally in their day-today lives. While feeling sad is a normal occurrence, some people may experience these feelings intensely and an extended period of time including weeks, months or even years. If a person is feeling sadness for these amounts of time this may indicate the presence of depression. Depression is more than just a low mood, it is a serious condition that affects your physical and mental health.
What are the Signs and Symptoms?
If you feel sad, down or miserable, for an increasing period of time such as more than two weeks, this may indicate the early signs of depression. Losing interest in the pleasure of usual activities is also a prominent sign that you may be depressed.
There are a number of symptoms, behaviours and feelings that are commonly associated with depression. It is important to remember that you may experience some of these symptoms from time to time, and this may not necessarily mean you’re depressed. Equally, not everyone who is experiencing depression will have all of the following symptoms.

What Causes Depression?
While there is no scientific consensus on the exact cause of depression, a number of components are linked to its development. Depression usually results from a combination of recent events and other longer-term or personal factors, rather than one immediate issue or event. Family history, personality, illness and drug / alcohol use may also have an impact on depression.
